DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State improved to 20-2 with a 9-2
victory win over Siena (0-9) this afternoon at Daytona’s Jackie Robinson
Stadium. Freshman Robby Read got the victory in his first career FSU start
and Chris Smith hit his sixth home run of the season to lead the Tribe to
their 14th consecutive win.

FSU scored first with two runs in the bottom of the third. Smith knocked in
the first run of the game with a single that scored Scott Boyd, who had
reached on an error. Ryan Barthelemy singled home Blair McCaleb for the
second run.

The Seminoles put up two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to open
up an 8-2 lead.

In the fourth, FSU took advantage of three Saint errors in scoring a pair of
runs. Brett Groves singled, stole second and came home on a throwing error
on Mike Futrell’s ground ball to third. Futrell then scored when Siena’s
shortstop mishandled a ball hit by Scott Boyd.

John-Ford Griffin got things going in the fifth with a leadoff triple, but
was thrown out at the plate when Barthelemy grounded to second. Karl
Jernigan doubled home Barthelemy and Groves singled to left to score Jernigan.
Smith, who hit for the cycle in Tuesday’s game vs. St. Joseph’s, hit his
second homer in as many days with Blair McCaleb aboard for FSU’s seventh and
eighth runs of the game.

Jernigan picked up his second RBI of the game when his single scored
Marshall McDougall in the seventh.

Read worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. The
freshman righthander struck out seven while walking just one. Chris Ginn,

year, took the loss after giving up eight runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings.
