TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Right fielder Matt Diaz knocked in three runs on a pair of doubles as No. 1 Florida State (25-3) defeated Akron (6-5), 7-4, at Dick Howser Stadium.
Freshman right-hander Chris Smith (1-0) held Akron to two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second start of the season. Smith earned his first decision and fanned five batters in the outing. Second baseman Marshall McDougall extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a triple that started a three-run rally in the first inning. McDougall scored on Diaz’ first double of the day. Diaz came around on a two-bagger by first baseman John Halliday and Halliday scored on a Sam Scott single as the Seminoles jumped out to a 3-0 advantage.
Diaz ripped a two-run double in the second inning to increase FSU’s lead to 5-0. Akron got on the board in the third inning with an RBI-triple by right fielder Mark Malaska. Malaska led the Zips with two hits on the day.
Centerfielder Karl Jernigan contributed two hits and an RBI and catcher Jeremiah Klosterman extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh inning.
Akron right-hander John Wilkinson (0-1) surrenderd six runs on nine hits in five innings. Wilkinson struck out three batters and walked three in the loss.
