The Seminoles: Florida State enters Tuesday’s game with a 13-2 record and
holds consensus No. 1 ranking for the third consecutive week by Baseball
America, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball Weekly.

  • The last time FSU
    held a consensus #1 ranking was the week of Feb. 24, 1997. The Tribe held
    it for two weeks (Feb. 17 & Feb. 24).

  • RF Matt Diaz is also riding an
    13-game hitting streak and leads FSU with a .481 average.

  • SS Brett Groves
    missed Sunday’s game against the Gators with a bruised shoulder after
    starting 87 consecutive games since last season. His status will be
    clearer Tuesday morning.

  • FSU is batting .337, has hit 25 home runs while
    averaging 10.1 runs per game.

  • The Seminole pitching staff has posted a
    2.62 ERA and opponents are batting just .201 against FSU. The staff is
    averaging 9.8 strikeouts per game.

  • FSU has allowed double-digit hits by
    opponents just once this season (10 against Arizona St.), and opponents
    scored five runs or more runs just twice this year.

  • FSU fielders are
    averaging an impressive .972 and have posted 10 games with one or no
    errors. FSU has won 10 of its 15 games by a 5+ run margin.

  • Head coach
    Mike Martin is in his 20th season as the Seminoles skipper, collecting a
    1,035-352-3 record over the past 20 years.

    On the Mound: RHP Blair Varnes will pitch for the first time since Feb.
    17th. Varnes is 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA and opponents are batting just .186
    against him.

    Scouting the Opponent: South Florida presently hold a 5-7 record, but will
    play Florida A&M in Tallahassee Monday before traveling across town. USF
    will throw LHP Scott Glaser (2-1, 4.50 ERA) who has wins against
    Mississippi State and Bethune-Cookman. 2B Ben Drawdy leads the Bulls with
    a .367 average and 10 RBI.

    Series Information: Florida State leads the series 60-15-1 since 1969. The
    Seminoles defeated South Florida, 8-4, in Tampa last year and edged the
    Bulls, 6-5, in the 1997 NCAA Regional in Tallahassee. Mike Martin is 32-14
    against South Florida during his tenure.
