TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State starting pitcher Blair Varnes
gave up just one hit over five innings and the Seminole offense pounded out
15 hits, including seven in an eight run first inning, as FSU cruised to
17-3 win over Troy State at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday.
Centerfielder Karl Jernigan led of the FSU first inning with a
strike out, but made up for it in his second at bat in the inning blowing
the game open with a three-run homer that put FSU up 8-0 after the first
inning. Jernigan finished 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI. Sam Scott
was one of five Seminoles who hit doubles in the game and he finished
2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Seminoles held the visiting Trojans scoreless until the eighth
inning when TSU first baseman Jorge Soto hit a three run homer off FSU
reliever Scott Hudson.
The win pushed the top-ranked Seminoles’ record to 7-0 on the
season, while Troy State dropped to 1-1.
The Seminoles will host Troy State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and
will finish the three-game series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
