TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The No. 10 Florida State Seminoles (29-10) belted five home runs as they defeated Miami (17-14) in the first game of the six-game series by a score of 13-3 in front of 4,785 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. Senior Richie Smith led the home run barrage with two on the night and Ryan Barthelemy, Jerrod Brown and Stephen Drew added one apiece. The five round-trippers were the most in a game since FSU hit nine at Maryland on May 9, 1999. Seminoles starter Matt Lynch (6-1) was the winner after allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

The Hurricanes scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when Kevin Howard reached on a fielder’s choice and then later scored from second on a throwing error by Bryan Zech.

Florida State answered with a run in the bottom half of the first when Ryan Barthelemy’s double to left center scored Stephen Drew.

The Seminoles added three more runs in the second when Drew hit a three-run homer, his third of the year, over the light post in right center field to make the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, FSU increased its lead to 7-1 after a pair of home runs. Brown launched a two-run shot to right and Smith hammered a solo homer to right center.

Miami closed the gap with two runs in the fourth. Matt Barket led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a double by Matt Dryer and scored on a fielder’s choice bunt by Danny Figueroa. Dryer scored the second run of the inning on a groundout by Brad Safchik.

Barthelemy’s 10th home run of the season, a solo blast to right center, made it 8-3 after four innings of play.

The Seminoles kept the scoring going with three more in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Bryan Zech had an RBI-single, Nick Rogers was hit by a pitch and Tony McQuade was also hit by a pitch to push the lead to 11-3.

FSU, which scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, got two more in the sixth for the final margin of 13-3. Smith’s second home run of the game, which came with Tony Richie on after a single, completed the scoring.

Drew (2-for-4), Barthelemy (2-for-5), Richie (2-for-4) and Smith (3-for-3) all had multi-hit games for the Tribe.

Lynch struck out five and walked two to earn his first win since March 8. Justin Miller worked two scoreless innings of relief and game up just one hit.

UM starter T.J. Prunty (4-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.

The two teams meet again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. FSU RHP Robby Read (5-1) is scheduled to face UM RHP Dan Touchet (2-1) at Dick Howser Stadium. The remaining two games of the series in Tallahassee will be televised live by Sunshine.
