JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — No. 13 Florida State (34-12) belted 12 hits as the Seminoles defeated Jacksonville (26-17), 11-4, in front of 1,305 fans at Brest Field.
Right-hander Nick Stocks (3-1) held the Dolphins to one run on three hits in six innings of work to earn the win for FSU. Stocks struck out six batters and walked five in the outing.
Designated hitter Terry Henderson belted a three-run triple and right fielder Matt Diaz drove in two runs on two hits to lead FSU offensively.
Right-hander Nick Regilio (4-4) gave up three runs on four hits in two innings as he took the loss for the Dolphins.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning sparked by a two-run single by second baseman Brooks Badeaux. First baseman Kevin Cash then came home on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Karl Jernigan to increase FSU’s lead to 3-0.
Florida State put five more runs on the board in the fifth inning with the help of two Dolphin errors and clutch hits by Henderson and Diaz. FSU loaded the bases on two fielding errors and a fielder’s choice setting the table for a base-clearing triple by Henderson. Diaz followed with a double off the right field wall to knock in Henderson. Cash walked and scored on a base hit to leftfield by shortstop Brett Groves to give the Seminoles an 8-0 lead in the fifth.
FSU continued its offensive explosion in the sixth inning scoring three more runs. Third baseman Jose Zabala singled and stole home on a double steal attempt for the first run of the inning. Diaz belted an RBI-base hit and Matt Woodward drove him in with a pinch-hit double to left-center.
Jacksonville ended the shutout in the sixth inning as right fielder Blane Layton walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Dennis Ray, cutting FSU’s lead to 11-1.
