No. 13 Florida State Men’s Golf Team Opens Spring Season At Gator Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The No. 13 ranked Florida State University men’s golf team tees off its spring season this weekend as its plays in the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Feb. 9-10 at the University of Florida Golf Course. The two-day, 54-hole event includes an impressive field of nationally ranked teams including ACC powers Duke and Wake Forest. The Seminoles finished second in the event in 2007. Their finish at last season’s Gator Invitational is tied for the second-best team finish under fifth-year head coach Trey Jones. The Seminoles also finished in second place at the Naples Invitational during the spring of 2006. Florida State earned the team title at the fall 2007 Inverness Intercollegiate – the first team victory for the Seminoles since 1998.

THE 2008 SUNTRUST GATOR INVITATIONAL FIELD
No. 13 Florida State is joined by No. 9 Duke, No. 12 Florida, No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 25 Mississippi State, No. 30 Ole Miss, No. 35 UAB, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, LSU, North Florida, South Alabama and South Florida in the 2008 SunTrust Gator Invitational. The event will be played at the Par 70, 6,701-yard University of Florida Golf Course.

RANKING THE SEMINOLES
Florida State is ranked No. 13 by GolfWeek Magazine and No. 15 in the head-to-head rankings by GolfStat. The Seminoles are the third highest ranked team in the ACC in the GolfWeek and GolfStat rankings and are behind only Georgia Tech (4/6) and Duke (9/9). The Seminoles were led during the fall 2007 season by All-Americans Jonas Blixt and Matt Savage who collectively had 20 rounds with scores under 75 in four events. Florida State finished with three top 10 team finishes in four stroke play events including a six-stroke victory over the field at the Inverness Intercollegiate.

BLIXT RANKED NO. 8 NATIONALLY AMONG DIVISION I INDIVIDUALS
Senior All-American Jonas Blixt is ranked No. 8 in the individual rankings by GolfWeek Magazine. During the fall season he earned his fourth career individual title at the Inverness Intercollegiate and finished the season with three top five finishes. Blixt finished the fall with an impressive six rounds under par and eleven of twelve rounds with a score under 75. Fellow All-American Matt Savage is ranked 69th in the individual rankings by GolfWeek entering the spring season. Savage finished the fall 2007 season with a 72.58 stroke average and 10 rounds with scores at 75 or below.

JONES CONTINUES TO RECRUIT WELL FOR FLORIDA STATE Florida State’s 2008-09 recruiting class which includes Wesley Graham and Brooks Koepka is ranked the nation’s fifth best recruiting class by GolfWeek Magazine. Graham is the No. 1 ranked junior golfer and Koepka is ranked No. 23. Graham was recently named to the Rolex All-America First-Team and is currently the No. 1 ranked junior in the nation. Koepka was the state champion as a junior at West Palm Beach’s Cardinal Newman High School. Koepka was named Golfer of the Year according to the Palm Beach Post as a junior.

GREEN INDUCTED INTO WORLD GOLF HALL OF FAME
Seminole legend Hubert Green was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., in November of 2007. Green was one of six inducted into the Class of 2007 and is the first Seminole in history to earn the honor. While at Florida State he led the Seminoles to a 10th place finish in the 1968 NCAA championship.
