No. 13 FSU Equals Most Wins In A Season With 3-1 Victory Over Hurricanes

Oct. 25, 2000

CORAL GABLES, Fla –
The 13th-ranked Seminoles equaled the school record for wins in a season (12) Wednesday evening as the downed in state rival Miami 3-1. The win moves FSU to 12-5-1 for the season and gives Florida State a 6-0 record against in state competition this season. The win also marks the sixth time this season that the Seminoles have defeated an opponent for the first time in the program’s history (North Carolina, Florida, Texas A&M, Wake Forest, Central Florida and Miami).

“This was a great night for us since we have never beaten Miami and they beat us 3-0 at home last year,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “I’m very proud of the effort tonight and to be up 3-0 after 80 minutes was a credit to our team. We learned a very valuable lesson from the Maryland game and I think that showed up in the way we played tonight.”

The Seminoles got on the board just 19 minutes into the game when freshman sensation Emma Breland scored off of an assist from fellow freshman Summer Corum. The goal was Breland’s 11th of the season and gives her 27 points on the year. Breland now owns FSU’s rookie record for goals and points. She is only one assist shy of tying the freshman record for assists and Breland is now just three goals away from setting the single season record for goals by a Seminole.

“We pulled Emma aside and told her we needed all the intangibles she brings to a game,” said Baker. “She had been a little bit quiet since Wake Forest and we really need her productivity up front. She stepped up and got us on the board early and that was just what we needed.”

The game stayed at 1-0 until the 10th minute of the second half when junior Marte Vik Edvardsen extended the Seminoles lead to 2-0 on an assist from Cindy Schofield. The goal was Vik Edvardsen’s fourth of the season and the assist, number six on the season for Schofield, moved the sophomore from Lakeland into first place for assists this season and into fifth place for all-time assists by a Seminole (7).

Vik Edvardsen wasn’t done scoring yet. The Oslo, Norway native scored her second goal of the game in the 71st minute off of assists from senior Sarah Deacon and freshman Amber Tollefson. Vik Edvardsen has five goals this season and is third on the team with 13points this season.

“Marte scored two brilliant goals,” said Baker. “It was great to see her get some goals down the stretch as we head into our final regular season game and then the ACC tournament.”

The Seminoles nearly notched their sixth shutout of the year but they were thwarted in the last two minutes of the game when Miami’s Deidre Bass scored her fourth goal of the season with just 1:40 left on the clock. Sarah Crawford and the Seminole defense have given up 1 goal or less ten times this season and have only allowed 22 goals all year. The record for the fewest goals allowed in a season is 35 and set in 1996.

“We lost Ashlee Fontes after just six minutes,” said Baker. “I give Tori George, Christy Peacock and the rest of our defense a lot of credit. They have stepped up all season and tonight was no different.”

The Seminoles concluded the away portion of their regular season schedule with a 4-4-1 record. It is only the second time in the history of the program that FSU hasn’t finished a season below .500 on the road.

“With all that has been made of our supposed road woes, I think we stepped up in our last road match and really did some of the things we needed to do to get in the right frame of mind for Virginia and the ACC tournament,” said Baker. “We scored more goals tonight than we’ve scored in any other road game this year and I think that is a good sign.”

The Seminoles return home for their last regular season game against Virginia Saturday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Sunshine Network and FSU’s seniors will be honored before the match. Florida State will attempt to increase their record for the best home mark ever and attempt to break the record for wins in a season against the Cavaliers.
