No. 13 FSU Soccer Drops First Game In A Month To Maryland 2-0

Oct. 20, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, MD –
After compiling a 6-0-1 record over the past month, the 13th-ranked Seminole soccer team (11-5-1) dropped its first match since a 3-2 loss to Duke September 16. The Maryland Terrapins shutout the Seminoles for only the second time this season and raised their record to 8-8 with a 2-0 victory Friday night at Ludwig Field in Maryland.

“The better team won tonight,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “We didn’t have a let down after the win over North Carolina. Maryland was just sharper and better than we were tonight.”

The Terrapins set the tone early when senior Terri Greer scored a goal just 2:15 into the first half from 10 yards out off of a cross from Courtney Beirne. The goal was only the second of the season for the senior from Woodbridge, VA.

Florida State pressured the Terrapins all game but was unable to beat senior keeper Riki-Ann Serrins. Despite recording 13 shots and five shots on goal, the Seminoles were unable to even the match.

Maryland was able to put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute when the Terps leading freshman scorer, Katie Ludwig, took possession of the ball about 20 yards away from goal and beat senior Sarah Crawford.

The loss marked the first time the Seminoles have been shutout in an ACC loss this season. Maryland continued a streak that has seen them record a shutout in their last five wins at Ludwig Field.

“Even when we beat North Carolina and Texas A&M and Florida, we always felt very fortunate for the success we’ve had this season,” said Baker. “We knew Maryland would be ready for us and we prepared for them just like we have prepared for every team this season.”

FSU will play their last road game of the season when they travel to the University of Miami to face the Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 25. The Seminoles then return home for senior night when they will face the 16th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The game will be regionally televised by the Sunshine Network.
