TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis teams will begin the 2010 season this weekend. The Seminoles face the USTA National Junior Team on Thursday, January 14 in Boca Raton, Fla. The Seminoles then head west to Naples to compete in the FGCU Invitational Friday-Saturday.
This is the first time the Seminoles will face the USTA National Team. The Seminoles will be bringing seniors Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) and Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) along with junior Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.).
“This is the first time we’ve ever done it but we’re excited about playing the USTA National Team,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “It should be a fun event and will be great matches; these are the best players in the country. It will be good to get some really tough matches to begin the season.”
The Seminoles will have their top players on the court as all four are ranked this season. Bowles leads the way ranked No. 23 in singles with Aubone right behind him at No. 27. Mirzadeh and Smith are ranked No. 31 in doubles.
The Seminoles partake in the FGCU Invitational on Friday, January 15 and continue through Saturday. Florida State is joined by host Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and No. 15 Illinois. Illinois boasts the No. 2 doubles team in the nation with Dennis Nevolo and Marek Czerwinski.
“I think this time of year you just want to play a ton of matches and get yourself ready and prepared for National Indoors at the end of the month,” explained Hultquist. “We’re looking to go down there and play a bunch of sets and get ready for the season.”
The first day of the tournament will be played on FGCU’s campus from 9am-4pm. Saturday’s event will move to Rutenberg Park (6500 South Point Boulevard, Fort Myers, Fla.) 9am-4pm.
Seminole fans in south Florida can join the team on the night of the 15th at The Club at Naples Bay Resort for dinner. There is also a community day from 12pm-1pm on Saturday. Please contact (850)644-1893 or email@example.com to RSVP or for more information.
