CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The No. 14-ranked Florida State men’s tennis team completed its five-match road trip undefeated after defeating No. 34 North Carolina 5-2 in Chapel, Hill N.C. The marks the first time FSU has beaten both the Tar Heels and Duke in the same season.
For the third consecutive match the Seminoles (15-5, 5-0) took the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. After jumping out to a 6-1 lead on court one No. 39-ranked juniors Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh had to hold on to defeat No. 34 Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman on court one. The duo broke the Tar Heels at 7-7 and then served out the match to win 9-7. On court three, sophomore Clint Bowles and freshman Chris Reiman were taken to a tiebreaker by Brennan Boyajian and Zach Hunter. Tied at five Bowles and Reimen won the last two points to clinch the match 9-8(5). On court two seniors Drew Bailey and Maciek Sykut had their four-match winning streak broken by Andrew Crone and Alex Raflee 8-4.
Bailey clinched the match for Florida State on court four against Hunter. The Tallahassee, Fla., native won the first set 7-6 dominating the tiebreaker 7-2. Hunter came back and took set two 6-1 and went up 3-2 in the third. However Bailey was able to win the last four games of the set to earn FSU the victory.
North Carolina (10-5, 0-3) was able to tie the match at 1-1 quickly in singles as No. 54 Fogleman defeated No. 57 Bowles in a quick 6-1, 6-1 straight sets victory. The Garnet and Gold regained the lead on court three where Sykut defeated Crone in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to win his second consecutive singles match. Mirzadeh made the match 3-1 on court four with his straight sets victory against Boyajian 6-4, 6-4. The junior has now won nine out of his last 10 matches and is 5-0 in ACC play. The Tar Heels claimed the next match on court five to make the score 3-2. Senior Chris Cloer was defeated in three sets by Luke Mojica 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. Cloer broke Mojica to tie the third set at 4-4, but Mojica was able to break the next game and then hold to gain the victory. In the final match of the day No. 20 Aubone also remained undefeated in ACC play with a 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 1-0(8) win over No. 34 Donato on court one.
Next up for Florida State is a pair of home matches at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. FSU will host Virginia Tech on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and No. 1 Virginia on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. For live scoring and a match recap visit www.seminoles.com.
