No. 14 FSU Set For First-Ever NCAA Tournament Match Wednesday Night

Nov. 8, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 14th-ranked Seminole soccer team (12-7-2) will step into history tonight when they take the field against Jacksonville University (19-2-0) for the first-ever NCAA Tournament match for both programs. The first round match will start at 7:00 p.m. and take place at the Seminole Soccer Complex on the campus of Florida State University.

Florida State received an at-large-bid to the 2000 NCAA Soccer Championships after moving past Wake Forest into the second round of the ACC Tournament and recording three victories over teams that are currently ranked in the top 11 of the country. Jacksonville received an automatic bid to the NCAA’s after winning the Trans America Athletic Conference and the Dolphins also had a 16 game-winning streak earlier this season.

“Amazingly, were the only team that was able to shut-out Jacksonville this season,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “I think both teams are playing better since our first match-up more than two months ago and it will be very interesting to see how things play out. As we have seen when we played Wake Forest for a second time, it is very difficult to beat a team twice in the same season.”

The Seminoles and Jaguars met August 30 with FSU taking a 3-0 decision in their third match during a five-day stretch. All-ACC first team selection, Emma Breland, scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Sarah Crawford recorded her first shutout of the season. Florida State holds a 4-1 advantage in the series and the Seminoles have out-scored the Dolphins 30-3 in those five matches.

“It was just awesome to get a bid to the tournament,” said freshman Amber Tollefson. “We are so pumped up to be facing Jacksonville again and we will be ready for the rematch. They went on a 16-game winning streak after we beat them so we are not taking this match lightly.”

Tickets for tonight’s first round NCAA tournament match are available at the Florida State ticket office and will also be available at the Seminole Soccer Complex box office at the front gate.
