TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 15th-ranked Seminole softball team is the overwhelming favorite to capture their eighth ACC softball crown in the ACC coaches’ preseason poll released Wednesday. Florida State garnered four of a possible five first place votes and finished six points ahead of defending champion North Carolina who received the remaining first-place vote.
“It is really an honor that my fellow coaches picked us to finish on top of the conference this season,” said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. “This conference keeps getting better every season and with teams like North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland all winning conference titles in the past, it gets tougher and tougher for us every year.”
Florida State won’t open conference play until April 13, 2002 when they welcome Georgia Teach to the Seminole Softball Complex for a doubleheader that will be televised by the Sunshine Network. Before then, FSU will get a look at Maryland when they meet the Terps in the Seminole Challenge Tournament in a non-conference game. Florida State will face one of its toughest regular season schedules before opening conference play in April. The Seminoles are scheduled to play at least four Top 25 teams and as many as 11 depending on the way tournament play unfolds.
“I think we will be battle-tested once conference play rolls around due to the amount of quality teams we face through the first two months of the season,” said Graf. “We play our entire conference schedule in a span of three weeks, so it will be important for us to be prepared and I believe we will.”
The 2002 season gets under way for FSU this weekend when the Seminoles host Georgia Southern in a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday February 3 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. This will be the third consecutive season that the Eagles and Seminoles have opened up their seasons with one another and it will be the fourth time in the past five years the two teams have met on opening day. Florida State leads the all-time series between the teams 9-1 and swept the doubleheader in 2000 with 8-0 and 4-0 wins in Statesboro.
