No. 15 Ranked Seminoles Women’s Golf Team In Sixth Place at Tar Heel Invitational

Oct. 4, 2002

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
The No. 15 ranked Florida State women’s golf team is in a tie for sixth place in the team standings and Seminole senior Kristin Tamulis is in a tie for third place in the individual standings following the first round of the Franklin Street Trust/Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Course. Florida State, ranked 15th in the latest GolfWeek/Sagarin poll, is only ten strokes off the team pace set by No. 5 Duke and trails No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State by one stroke.

Tamulis (Naples, Fla.) tied her collegiate career-low as she carded a 70 in the first round and is only three stokes off the medallist pace set by Duke’s Liz Janangelo. One of the nation’s top senior golfers, Tamulis carded scores of 35 on both the front and back nine of the par 72 course on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Tamulis’ score of 70 marked her best collegiate round since the fall of 1999 (her freshman season) when she carded a 70 in the third round of the Lady Seminole Classic.

Junior Katie Quinney (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) carded a four-over par 76 and is the only other Seminole ranked in the top-30 in the individual standings. Junior Carrie Sordel (Windermere, Fla.) and freshman Caroline Larsson (Danderyed, Sweden) carded five-over par scores of 77 and junior Alison Curdt (St. Louis, Mo.) totaled a 78. Curdt was the highest placing Seminole at last week’s ACC/SEC Challenge as she finished in a tie for 12th place – the best individual finish of her career.

Duke leads the team standings with a 290 team total and is followed by North Carolina who totaled a 296. Janangelo leads the individual standings with a five-under par score of 67. She is followed by Furman’s Leigh Tuner (four-under par 68), Tamulis, UNC Wilmington’s Amelie Farrah (two-under par 70) and a group of five players tied for fifth place in the standings.

The second round of the event begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the third and final round beginning Sunday at 9 a.m.
