Tallahassee, Fla.- Florida State men’s tennis save its best for last taking two third set tiebreakers to defeat No. 22 Pepperdine 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
With FSU trailing 3-2 No. 35 ranked Jean-Yves Aubone took No. 16 ranked Andre Begemann to a third set tiebreaker. The sophomore from Miami, Fla. lost the first set 6-3, before roaring back to take the second set 6-4. Aubone dominated the tiebreaker 7-2 to win the third set 7-6(2) and tie the match at three.
That left freshman Clint Bowles on the court in the No.2 position in the third set tied at four against the No. 22 ranked player in the country Bassam Beidas. Bowles broke to go up 5-4, but Beidas broke right back to knot the match at five. The two exchanged games to send the match to a deciding tiebreaker. Bowles quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead and coasted from there to clinch the match for the Seminoles 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(2).
The Seminoles (7-1) went up 2-0 when junior Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) defeated Mahmoud Kamel in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Pepperdine (1-5) rallied to win the next three matches getting its first point when Omar Altmann defeated senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) at the No. 3 position. The Waves tied the match up after James Lemke beat junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. Pepperdine took the lead at the No. 6 position when sophomore Brad Mixson (Miami, Fla.) lost to Alex Moreno in straight sets 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-2.
The doubles saw Mixson and junior Drew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) get off the court first at the No. 3 position defeating Altmann and Kamel 8-6. At the No. 2 position Chang and Sykut were defeated by Lemke and Beidas 8-6. With the match knotted at one, the Seminoles No. 26 ranked duo of Aubone and Bowles set the table for the dramatic day by winning the duo’s first tiebreaker of the day 9-8(5) against Begemann and Rikus De Villiers.
Florida State will be back in action on Friday, February 29 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center as the Seminoles open up ACC play against No. 38 Georgia Tech.
