No. 16 FSU Women’s Tennis Defeats No. 42 UNLV 7-0

March 13, 2008

Las Vegas- The No. 16-ranked Florida State women’s tennis squad took a gamble in making the school’s first trip to Nevada to play No. 42 UNLV (8-4), but the risk paid off in a 7-0 victory for the Seminoles (11-2, 1-1) on Wednesday, March 12 in Las Vegas.

Despite the shutout score, the Seminoles fought tooth-and-nail with the Rebels up until the very end, pushing three matches into three sets with a couple of close tiebreakers. In one of those gritty battles, sophomore No. 74 Lauren Macfarlane pushed the No. 28 player in the country, Elena Gatcheva, to a third-set tiebreaker, which she won 10-7 to give the Utah-native a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 upset on the center court.

Fellow sophomore Jessica Wente also picked up a big victory, coming back from a 4-6 deficit in the first set to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Along with Macfarlane, the two sophomores also defeated the Rebels’ Alisa Razina and Anna Maskaljun 8-5 on court two in helping the Seminoles earn the doubles match point.

The Seminoles will take a week off before returning to the courts on March 22-23 for a weekend road trip to visit conference-rivals Virginia and No. 46 Virginia Tech.
