Feb. 29, 2008

Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 16 Florida State (8-1, 1-0) men’s tennis team pulled away from No. 36 Georgia Tech (8-2, 0-1) Friday night, February 29, 2008. After losing the doubles point, the Seminoles won five of their singles matches to defeat the Yellow Jackets 5-2 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

“Georgia Tech always competes so hard, I think that is one of the challenges playing them,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They are such great competitors; I think their coaches do such a great job with that. We were good in a lot of different places and what makes a great team is different people come up in key matches at different times.”

The Seminoles were unable to come up with the doubles point with senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) and junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) coming up with the only victory. They defeated Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin 9-8 on court three.

It was the singles competition that brought the best out of the Seminoles as they were able to win the last five matches to win their first ACC match of the season. Chang started the victories for FSU by defeating Potvin on court three 6-2, 6-3. Sykut won 6-3, 6-1 against Ryan Smith on court five while No. 36 sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) battled Guillermo Gomez to win 7-5, 6-4 on court one. Clinching the victory for the Seminoles was sophomore Brad Mixson (Miami, Fla.) on court six winning 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 over Muguruza.

“It feels like the work we did this work paid off,” said Mixson. “We talked about how we definitely wanted to start our first ACC match with a win. After doubles we weren’t happy with losing the point and we were able to fight back and win the match, it was very key to the start of the ACC season.”

The Seminoles return to the court Sunday afternoon against Texas A&M at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all matches.
