No. 18 Florida State Escapes Hawaii With 4-3 Victory

Jan. 19, 2008

Honolulu, Hawaii – The Florida State men’s tennis team knew their trip to Hawaii wouldn’t be easy and the Seminoles 4-3 victory over the host Rainbow Warriors proved just that.

“I think Hawaii is one of the most dangerous teams in the country,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They’re about as good as anyone in the country, by the end of the year they will probably end up having three ranked players.”

FSU (4-0) began the match down 1-0 after losing two out of three doubles contests. Senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) and junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) lost to Hawaii’s Jeff Fitch and Dennis Lajola 8-5 and No. 31 ranked Jean-Yves Aubone and Clint Bowles were upset by Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann 8-5.

In singles action, it was Aubone’s upset win over the No. 25 ranked Weber that put the Seminoles in position to clinch the match. Florida State and Hawaii were tied at three when Aubone took home the winning point. The sophomore took out the highly ranked Rainbow Warrior in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

“That was the key match for us to win,” said Hultquist. “Jean-Yves [Aubone] was down two set points in the first, it was a very hard fought well played match. That’s one of the biggest victories of his career.”

Junior Chris Cloer (Brevard, N.C.) defeated Spence Mendoza 7-6(4), 6-1, Sykut beat Jeff Fitch 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Brad Mixson was victorious over Craig Faulk 6-3, 6-1. Hawaii took home two victories over the Seminoles two ranked competitors. Lajola upset the No. 68 ranked Chang 7-5, 6-3 while Heinemann defeated No.78 ranked Bowles 6-3, 7-5.

“Brad (Mixson) did a nice job, the intensity of our guys four through six really set us up,” said Hultquist. “Maciek (Sykut) and Chris [Cloer] had great matches and helped put us in position to win the match.”

On Thursday, Florida State defeated St. Mary’s 5-2. Next up for the Seminoles in a double header on Saturday, January 26 against No. 64 ranked Furman and Florida A&M at Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
