Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 18 Florida State (2-0) defeated VMI (0-2) by a final of 8-1 at Dick Howser Stadium Monday afternoon. The Seminoles held the Keydets hitless until the ninth inning and didn’t allow a base runner until the fourth inning. Right-hander Eddie Cannon (1-0) earned the win while recording three strikeouts in a predetermined four-inning start. Mark Sauls followed with three no-hit innings and Brian Schultz added a perfect eighth.
FSU took the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Shane Robinson led off the inning with a single through the left side and moved to third on a single from Stephen Drew and an Eddy Martinez-Esteve walk. Robinson later scored on a sacrifice fly to right from Derrick Smith and Drew scored the final run of the inning on Gibbs Chapman’s bunt single.
The Seminole increased the lead to 3-0 in the second after Zech scored on Drew’s fielder’s choice grounder to first base. Zech led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Matt Sauls drew a walk as well and then advanced to third on Robinson’s flyout to right.
In the bottom of the fourth, Florida State added four more runs highlighted by Chapman’s three-run triple down the right line.
The Keydets were held hitless until the ninth inning when center fielder Brandon Massenburg singled off Tyler Chambliss. Massenburg later scored on a single by Allan Wimmer to make the final score 8-1.
Cannon, in his second career start, retired his first nine batters and only allowed one base runner.
Chapman (2-for-4), Robinson (2-for-5), and Zech (2-for-3) led the Seminoles offensively with multi-hit games. Making his first career start, Chapman knocked in four runs.
J.J. Hollenbeck took the loss for VMI after working three innings and giving up three runs on three hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Florida State travels to Tempe next weekend for a three-game series with the 10th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. The series will be the season opener for ASU. Game times are set for Friday at 9:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (all times EST).
