April 11, 2008

Winston-Salem, N.C. – No. 19 Florida State (15-5, 6-4) kicked off its last weekend of women’s tennis regular season play with a 6-1 stomping of No. 32 Wake Forest (8-10, 4-6). Senior Carolin Walter roared back after losing her first set to give FSU the team win and move her season record to 17-3.

“The girls did a great job taking care of business today,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We have a day off tomorrow so we can get in some rest. After that we’re excited to close out our regular season ACC schedule against NC State on Sunday.”

Walter defeated the Demon Deacons’ Emilee Malvehy 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 on court three to give the Seminoles their fourth point of the match including Wake Forest’s two forfeits in doubles and singles.

Prior to Walter’s match-clenching win, freshman Katie Rybakova and sophomore Lauren Macfarlane picked up a pair of wins at the top of the order to put the Seminoles in a position to win the team match. No. 30 Rybakova defeated Sasha Kulikova 6-3, 6-2 on the spotlight court to extend her winning streak to five matches while No. 72 Macfarlane upended Christian Tara 6-2, 6-2 on court two.

After the team match was decided, freshman Federica Suess closed out the day with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Aileen Davis. Suess is now 8-1 in the ACC with eight straight victories dating backing to the Seminoles’ 7-0 win over UNLV on March 12.

The Seminoles also earned the doubles point with Macfarlane and fellow sophomore Jessica Wente’s 8-1 victory over Malvehy and Davis on court two. Walter and Suess completed the Seminole sweep in pairs with a close 9-7 defeat of Kulikova and Tara in the number two spot.

Because of injuries, Wake Forest did not post players on singles court six or doubles court three, giving senior Tapiwa Marobela a singles and doubles victory by default along with Rybakova.

Florida State will be back in action on Sunday, April 13 against N.C. State in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. The  match will close out FSU’s regular season competition. Play begins Thursday, April 17 at the ACC Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
