TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The 21-6 Florida State women’s tennis team travels to the campus of Notre Dame to compete in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, the 19th-ranked Lady Seminoles will face the 39th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes at 2pm on Saturday, May 15th.
“We’re obviously dissappointed we are not hosting a regional, but we are really excited to be selected for the tournament,” said FSU Women’s Head Coach Lise Gregory. “We have a really good chance of winning our regional and advancing to the NCAA Championships in Gainesville.”
The other two schools in FSU’s bracket are Illinois-Chicago and Notre Dame. Host Notre Dame is ranked 12th in the country and will face Mid-Western Collegiate Conference champion Illinois-Chicago in their first round match-up.
The ACC, which had all nine of it’s schools represented in the ITA’s most recent Top 75 Rankings, only had four schools selected to compete in the 64-team NCAA Tournament. #4 Duke, #17 Wake Forest, and # 25 North Carolina join #19 Florida State in the tournament field. Left out were #40 Georgia Tech, # 43 Maryland, #48 Virginia, and tied for 75th, Clemson and N.C. State.
The sixty-four team field will be narrowed to sixteen by the end of the May 14th weekend. Those sixteen teams will travel to Gainesville May 22-28, to compete for the NCAA championship.
