#2 FLORIDA STATE (21-2)
Florida State, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll, opens ACC play this weekend with a home series against Virginia. The Seminoles won a pair of mid-week games on Tuesday and Wednesday over St. Joseph’s to improve to 21-2. All-American catcher Tony Richie leads the team with a .375 batting average, 12 doubles, four home runs and 28 RBI. The team lost co-No. 1 starting pitcher Marc LaMacchia for the season as he will undergo “Tommy John” surgery in late March or early April. LHP Matt Lynch (5-0, 3.19 ERA) will start Friday, LHP Trent Peterson (3-0, 2.03 ERA) will start Saturday and LHP Daniel Davidson (2-0, 0.75 ERA) gets the nod Sunday against the Cavaliers. The all-southpaw weekend rotation is believed to be the first in the Mike Martin era.
Virginia defeated UNC-Greensboro 12-5 and 14-6, respectively, in a pair of mid-week games to extend its winning streak to seven games. The Cavaliers are led offensively by SS Mark Reynolds (.379, 2 HR, 16 RBI). RHP Jeff Kamrath (1-0, 2.08 ERA), LHP Mike Ballard (0-1, 1.76 ERA) and RHP Chris Gale (1-1, 3.78 ERA) make up the Virginia starting rotation.
Florida State leads the all-time series with Virginia 31-8, which dates back to 1972. FSU won two of three at Virginia last year and swept the Cavaliers two years ago in Tallahassee.
