Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 2 Florida State (6-1) scored in every inning but the third and piled up 18 hits to defeat Evansville (0-1) by a final score of 13-2 in front of 3,027 fans at Dick Howser Stadium Friday night. Matt Lynch improved to 3-0 on the season after giving up two runs over six innings, while sophomore shortstop Stephen Drew recorded four hits, including a triple, scored four runs and had two RBI. Seven different Seminole batters had multi-hit performances in the win.
Drew scored the first run of the game to give the Seminoles an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The All-American led off the the game with a single to center and stole second before scoring on Tony Richie’s single to center.
In the bottom of the second, Florida State added three runs to make it 4-0. Drew plated two with a triple and Tony McQuade knocked in a run with a groundout.
The Aces got both their runs on solo homers. Luke Miller hit the first one to lead off the fourth and Anthony Albano homered in top of the sixth.
FSU scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before putting the game out of reach with four runs in the seventh. Jerrod Brown’s two-run base hit highlighted the four-run seventh as the Seminoles pushed the lead to 11-2.
The Tribe added two in the eighth with McQuade and Danny Wardell each picking up an RBI.
Tony Richie (2-4, 2 RBI), Brown (2-4, 2 RBI), McQuade (2-for-6, 3 RBI) joined Drew with multi-RBI games.
Shaun Williams took the loss for Evansville after allowing five earned runs on eight hits in four innings. Lynch was the winner, striking out six and walking one over six innings of work.
The series continues Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with FSU freshman right-hander Mark Sauls (1-0, 2.16 ERA) taking the hill against Evansville right-hander Adam Rogers (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
