No. 20 FSU Falls To No. 5 Baylor, 5-2, In First Round Of Indoors

MADISON, Wis. – Despite fighting back during singles, the No. 20 Florida State women’s tennis team (3-3) fell to No. 5 Baylor, 5-2, in the first round of the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday, February 12. The squad will now move on to the consolation draw Saturday to face No. 10 Georgia at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. 

Baylor started off the match strong as it earned back-to-back doubles’ wins on courts two and one, respectively, to earn the 1-0 lead in to singles.

However it was singles that featured the Seminoles scaring the Bears as two veterans posted two consecutive points for the Garnet and Gold.

Falling on court four to allow Baylor to win its second point was junior Federica Suess as she fell to Taylor Ormond 6-4, 6-2.

Court two saw Florida State winning its first point in junior Katie Rybakova as she trumped No. 70 Csilla Borsanyi 7-5, 6-4 on court two.Rybakova’s victory was her third win over a ranked opponent this spring.

Earning FSU’s second point and tying the score 2-2 was senior Jessica Sucupira on court six as she dominated Carla Lindlar 7-6 (3), 6-0. Sucupira improved her spring record to 5-3.

Pushing Baylor ahead 3-2 was senior Lauren McCreless, ranked No. 23, as she fell 7-6(3), 6-3 to No. 17 Lenka Broosova on court one.

Meanwhile courts three and five featured No. 62 Francesca Segarelli and No. 115 Amy Sargeant, respectively, battling to win their second set as both freshmen fell in the first.

Court five saw the Bears scoring their fourth point to clinch the match as Sargeant lost to Karolina Filipiak 6-1, 6-1. The freshmen will continue to battle for her first spring-season win in tomorrow’s consolation round.

Finishing the day for the `Noles was Segarelli in her match against No. 24 Nina Secerbegovic. Despite frustrating the Bear in the first set, Segarelli fell in both sets 7-5, 6-2, to give Baylor its fifth point.
