No. 20 Men’s Tennis Stays Unbeaten

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 20 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (8-0) continued their unbeaten streak Saturday as the defeated Florida Gulf Coast (0-3) 4-0 and East Tennessee State (1-1) 4-1.

“Both FGCU and ETSU are perennial teams making the NCAA tournament,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “For us to only lose one point in the two matches that is a good sign for how we have played.”

On a frigid morning, the Garnet and Gold got off to a hot start in doubles, taking the point from the Eagles. On court three senior twins, Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst ran through their opponent, sweeping them 6-0. With an almost simultaneous finish on court, one senior Guy Iradukunda and junior Aziz Dougaz swept their opponent as well, 6-0.

The top of the Seminoles lineup made quick work once again as Iradukunda and Dougaz were the first two off of court one and two. Iradukunda took down his opponent 6-2, 6-2 and Dougaz took down the opposition 6-3, 6-1.

Terrell Whitehurst clinched his second match of the season as he won 6-2, 6-0 on court six.

“I thought we were pretty sharp in the doubles against Florida Gulf Coast,” said Hultquist. “It was a good match with Aziz off quick. It was a good sharp match all around.”

Florida State did not get off to such a great start in their second match of the day against East Tennessee State. The Seminoles lost their first doubles point all season. The Whitehurst twins were the first pair to fall as they lost on court two 6-2, losing their first doubles match of the season. Dougaz and Iradukunda tied it up at one apiece in doubles, winning on court two 6-4. On court one Gracia and Poullain were locked at 5-5 against East Tennessee State’s No. 37th ranked doubles pair of Juan Lugo and Frazier Rengifo. The Seminoles could not pull it out as they lost 7-5.

The Noles quickly turned it around in singles as they took the first set on five of the six courts. Sophomore Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar had an impressive showing and garnered the first point for the Noles on court six, winning 6-0, 6-2.

“It was our first time losing the doubles so I thought we did a good job of getting ahead in the beginning of singles,” said Hultquist. “At one point we won 29 games and they had only won 11 in the first set. We did a good job of gaining control of five of the six courts. They made a little bit of a run in the second set and were doing a little better, but then we closed it out. Rana was really sharp today. He got off really quick.”

The top of the Seminoles lineup remained strong as Dougaz earned his eighth win of the season and fifth on court one.  Poullain was not far behind improving to 6-0 on the year after taking down Juan Lugo 6-3, 6-4 on court two.

The Seminoles top three singles players are a combined 21-0 on the season

Freshman Chase Wood earned his fourth dual match victory on court five and his second match clincher. Wood won 6-1, 6-2.

“Chase’s games last a long time, but he had a pretty dominant performance as well,” said Hultquist.

“It was a nice day and continues our good start to the season, now we have the Kickoff Weekend next week,” said Hultquist.

The Seminoles are back on the court Saturday, January 27 to take on Purdue in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Waco, Texas. The Noles will take on either Baylor or UNLV on Sunday.
