No. 20 Women’s Tennis Knocks Off North Carolina, 5-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The 20th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis
team traveled to Chapel Hill Friday and defeated the University of North
Carolina by a score of 5-2. This was the first stop on the Lady Seminole’s
three match road trip that takes them to Wake Forest Saturday and finishes
at North Carolina State Sunday.

Lady Seminole Kia Asberg improved her winning streak to 13 matches
by defeating UNC freshman Kendrick Bunn 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. The
senior from Sweden has now won 14 of 16 dual matches this season and is 9-0
in the No. 3 spot this spring.

Two Lady Seminoles improved their records to 11-5 in the spring
dual match season with victories Friday. In No. 1 singles, Seminole
sophomore Alida Gallovits defeated Marlene Mejia 6-0,6-7,6-3. The victory
is the fourth in a row for Gallovits. Florida State’s Nanette Duxin also
raised her dual match record with an impressive 6-1,6-0 victory over
Jessica Zaganczyk in No. 2 singles.

At No. 6 singles, Ali Weber defeated UNC’s Kate Pinchbeck
7-5,4-6,7-5. The senior from Clermont, Florida has now won nine of 14
matches this season when starting at No. 5 or No. 6 singles. In No. 4
singles, Jessica Balbuena defeated sophomore Caroline Hill 6-3, 6-2 to
raise her record to 3-2 in the No. 4 spot.

Tar Heel junior Courtney Zalinski defeated FSU’s Marina Raic
1-6,6-2,6-3 in No. 5 singles. That was only the second loss Raic suffered
this season at the No. 5 slot. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Mejia/Niebling
defeated Florida State’s Duxin and Gallovits 8-6. That snapped the duo’s
three match winning streak and dropped their record to 8-5 this season.

The Lady Seminoles head to Wake Forest Saturday to take on the
Demon Deacons who are currently the 3rd-ranked team in the nation . Wake
Forest is also tied for first place in the ACC with the Duke Blue Devils.
The women’s tennis team will wind up their road trip when they visit North
Carolina State Sunday.
