TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 21st-ranked Florida State softball team shutout Maryland to complete the sweep on Easter Sunday with a 1-0 win at JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex. The Seminoles improve to 32-13 overall and 8-4 in the ACC, good for a third place ranking, while Maryland slips to 20-20 and 5-7.
Florida State got on the board first in the second inning when the Seminoles were able to manufacture a run thanks to Ashley Stager. The sophomore had a bunt single to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a Monica Montez groundout.
After stealing third, Kristie McConn lined a double into left field to drive in the first run of the game. Stager led the Noles in hitting, going 2-for-2 along with two stolen bases, including the only run of the game. McConn and Brittany Joseph each also added a hit for the Seminoles.
Terese Gober picked up her 20th win of the season with a strong performance inside the circle. Gober (20-8) clinched the first 20-win season by a pitcher since 2006 when Tiffany McDonald won 30 games, leading the Seminoles to a Super Regional appearance. Gober pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only four Maryland hits and striking out three.
Tallahassee native Sarah Hamilton entered the game in relief of Gober in the top of the sixth with a runner on first and two outs in a save situation, hoping to preserve the lead for FSU. Maryland second baseman Breanna Shaw hit the first pitch right back to Hamilton, recording the third out of the inning to get out of trouble.
Hamilton picked up her first save of the season, and the second of her career by finishing off the Terrapins in the seventh. After allowing a leadoff single by Kerry Hickey, a sacrifice bunt by Alex Schultz put the tying run on second base with one out. After striking out the next Maryland batter looking on a breaking ball, Hamilton secured the Florida State win with a groundball to second to complete the sweep.
Florida State will take its three-game winning streak on the road to Troy University this Tuesday, April 14, for the fourth match-up between the teams this season. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. with live GameTracker stats available on www.seminoles.com.
