No. 21 Florida State Men’s Tennis Advances to Finals of the FSU Spring Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 21 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (5-0) went 2-0 on the day. They defeated Louisiana 4-0 in the first round and Georgia State 4-0 in the semifinals to advance to the finals against Furman Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

“It was a good day today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Even though we won 4-0 and 4-0, they were not easy matches. We were pushed and the top of our lineup played really well. I was pleased how we responded to being down in doubles today. Our energy level was good in the second match and I look forward to bringing that to the finals tomorrow.”

Due to the cold weather, the Noles took on the Ragin Cajuns in the FSU Indoor Tennis courts. All six singles courts began at once as the Garnet and Gold jumped out to a hot start, winning set one on all six courts. Florida State then turned that into a 4-0 victory against Louisiana.

Redshirt senior Lucas Poullain got a quick win on court three as he dominated his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Junior Aziz Dougaz gave the Noles a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court two. On court one, senior Guy Iradukunda took down his opponent 6-3, 6-4 to give Florida State an almost insurmountable lead.

Senior Terrell Whitehurst earned his first match-clinching win in his first singles match of the season. He defeated Pearse Dolan on court five 6-3, 7-5.

The Noles continued their hot play in the semifinals as they took on Georgia State.

The Noles fought in a tough doubles battle but pulled out the doubles point for the fourth time this season. Dougaz and Iradukunda earned the first doubles victory and the Whitehurst twins clinched the doubles point with stellar play.

In singles, Poullain once again made quick work and won 6-1, 6-1. Dougaz followed that up winning on court one 6-3, 6-1. Iradukunda clinched the match for the Noles on court two to advance them to the finals.

The Seminoles will take on Furman tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in the Florida State Spring Invitational Finals.

Admission is free at the Indoor Tennis Facility throughout the tournament and is located at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd., Tallahassee, Fla., 32310.
