TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 21 ranked Florida State men’s tennis team (8-0) heads to Waco this weekend to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend event hosted by Baylor. The Seminoles will begin competition on Saturday, January 27th against Purdue (2-2) at 12 p.m. ET and then will take on either Baylor (2-0) or UNLV (0-0) on Sunday, January 28th.
“Baylor always does a great job of hosting events like this,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “They have great facilities and we are really looking forward to playing there this weekend.”
The Seminoles are 2-0 all-time against Purdue with their last meeting coming in 1982. Florida State has never played UNLV and is 2-3 against the Baylor Bears with the last match in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2016.
“Purdue had a good season last year,” said Hultquist. “They have a young team and a young coach and should be very good this season.”
“We have a good region this year and are looking forward to the challenge and opportunity we have ahead of us,” said Hultquist. “We have had a very good start this year going 8-0 and we look to keep that momentum going to try to make National Indoors in a few weeks.”
The top of the Seminoles lineup is leading the way for the Garnet and Gold this season as No. 24 redshirt senior Lucas Poullain, No. 22 senior Guy Iradukunda and junior Aziz Dougaz are a combined 21-0 at the one through three positions.
There are 15 regionals played on both the men’s and women’s side, with four teams competing in each regional. The winners of the single-elimination event advance to next month’s ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash. at the University of Washington
