Final Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.Led by junior Ytai Abougzir and freshman Maciek Sykut, the Florida State Seminoles (3-3, 0-1 ACC) finished the weekend strong with a 7-0 sweep against Furman in a quad meet at Scott Speicher Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.  In the first match of the day, No. 75 Nebraska rallied to defeat 22nd-ranked Florida State, 4-3.

Abougzir (ranked No. 72 in the country) and Sykut (ranked No. 68) were the only two Seminoles to finish the day with a perfect 2-0 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark with their respective partners.

Chris Cloer

Against Nebraska, the Seminoles jumped out early and clinched the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and 2.  The Abougzir/Chris Westerhof pair upended the Posch/Tate team (8-5) and Andrew Bailey and Sykut took care of the Szatmary/Chow duo (8-5).  The Huskies’ Bartnel/Jones team earned an 8-3 win over Sam Chang and Chris Cloer.

In singles play, Florida State took the early lead in four matches and won the first set.  However, Nebraska forced a three-set affair in three matches and earned victories in each contest for the come-from-behind victory.  At No. 1 singles, Abougzir beat Szatmary 6-2, 6-4 and Sykut shutdown Barthel (6-3, 6-0) at the fourth position.  The Seminoles failed to pull out a victory at positions 2, 3, 5 and 6.

After an hour break, FSU was back on the court to battle the Paladins for the final match of the weekend.  In doubles, Abougzir and Westerhof toppled Paluhn/Maarschalk, 8-3, and the Bailey/Sykut pair defeated Crook and Ladyman, 8-6, for the point.  The Seminoles won all six of their singles matches for the sweep.

Florida State will have one week to prepare for No. 2 Florida before traveling to Seattle for the 2006 National Indoors.
