TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — For the first time since the 1998 season, the Florida State volleyball team has the proverbial target on its back as the Seminoles will take a top-25 ranking to South Florida to compete in the FIU/Miami Invitational.
Featuring Florida International, Miami, Albany NY and Middle Tennessee State, No. 22 FSU will take on each team expect Miami over the course of Saturday and Sunday as the Hurricanes come to Tallahassee for an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown on Sept. 18.
The Seminoles’ No. 22 ranking in the AVCA Division I Coaches Poll is the program’s highest since Sept. 22, 1998 when the program was pegged as the nation’s No. 21-ranked squad. FSU has never been ranked higher than No. 17.
FSU (5-1) earned its national ranking this week thanks to an impressive start to the season that was highlighted this past weekend by a clean sweep of the New Mexico State Tournament. In Las Cruces, NM, the Seminoles not only swept then-No. 8 Illinois but they also defeated the host Aggies in straight sets and needed just three games to take out the Italian National Team in an exhibition match. The victory over the Illini marked FSU’s first win over a ranked opponent since the 2002 campaign and according to records is the highest-ranked opponent to ever be defeated by an FSU volleyball team in program history.
This weekend in South Florida, the Seminoles will be looking to avoid an upset as they gear up for the start of conference play next week.
