Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 24 Florida State (6-3) defeated Oral Roberts (3-2) by a final score of 6-4 in front of 2,873 fans at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday afternoon. For the second time this season, senior starter Eddie Cannon (3-0) tied a career-high with nine strikeouts as he picked up his third win of the season. Cannon allowed three runs on six hits and did not walk a batter in 6.2 innings. Kevin Lynch recorded his first save of the season as he worked a scoreless inning.
FSU scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shane Robinson and Stephen Drew both drew walks to start the inning and moved up on a double steal. Danny Wardell plated Robinson with a sacrifice fly to right while Drew moved to third. Drew then scored on a wild pitch from Golden Eagle starter Taylor McIntyre for the 2-0 lead.
Oral Roberts took its first lead of the series in the top of the second inning. Dennis Bigley and Grant Plumley hit back-to-back singles and right fielder Kevin Lamb blasted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center, to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead.
The Seminoles tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the third inning. Aaron Cheesman was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a groundout to second by Drew. Cheesman scored the tying run when Eddy Martinez-Esteve’s RBI-double hit a double high off the screen in right center.
A pair of RBI-singles from Derrick Smith and Bryan Zech in the fifth inning gave Florida State a 5-3 lead. Robinson led off the fifth with a bunt single and moved to second as Martinez-Esteve reached on an error by third baseman Boomer Welles. Smith’s single through the right side plated Robinson and moved Martinez-Esteve to third as the Seminoles took the lead. Martinez-Esteve later scored on Zech’s RBI-single through the left side to give FSU the lead.
Florida State got another run in the sixth inning to make it 6-3. Ryne Malone doubled to right center, advanced to third courtesy of a sacrifice bunt from Gibbs Chapman before scoring on a balk from ORU reliever Tim Robertson.
ORU cut the lead to two at 6-4 in the top of the eighth. Matt VanDerBosch singled on a bunt to first base, stole second and scored on Bigley’s RBI-single to right-center.
Cheesman was the only Seminoles with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Robinson led FSU with two runs scored.
The three-game series between FSU and ORU will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium. Sophomore RHP Mark Sauls (0-1, 7.04 ERA) will face ORU left-hander Matt Hancock (1-0, 1.80 ERA).
