After four hours and 25 minutes of play, the Seminoles captured their fourth Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the 2007 dual-match season. No. 25 Florida State men’s tennis dominated in all three doubles matches and later clinched four additional points in singles to defeat the No. 30 Virginia Tech Hokies 5-2. Florida State improves their record to 12-7 and 4-4 in the ACC while Virginia Tech slips to 12-7 with a 3-5 ACC record.
In doubles action, Florida State played a close tiebreak battle on center court with senior Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) fought to upset VT’s #28 Pedro Graber and Nicolas Delgado 8-7 (6). Seminole senior-freshman duo Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) captured another victory over the Hokies’ Albert Larregola and Alexei Sergeev 8-4 while Florida State’s sophomore Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) and freshman Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) completed the doubles shut out by downing Virginia Tech’s Arvid Puranen and Brandon Corace 8-2.
Florida State continued ranked victories in singles competition as #99 Abougzir defeated VT’s #41 Arvid Puranen 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Virginia Tech’s Albert Larregola pulled out after doubles play to be replaced by Delgado who overcame Florida State’s #94 Aubone 6-2, 6-3 while the Hokies picked up a second point in position three as Yoann Re fought back to defeat Sykut 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Three more singles points came from the bottom half of the line up with Chang winning a three-set match over VT’s Graber 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 followed by Sucupira dominating in position five with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Corace. Florida State earned a fifth match point from court six as Mixson defeated Virginia Tech’s Ignaci Roca 6-4, 6-1.
ACCtion continues at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Sunday, April 8 as the No. 25 Seminoles (12-7, 4-4 ACC) play host to the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (18-3, 7-0 ACC). Florida State men’s tennis team welcomes the Tallahassee community in their final home match of the dual-season. Seniors and co-captains Abougzir and Sucupira will be recognized at intermission in their final home match at Florida State.
