No. 25 FSU Opens Kick-Off Weekend With 4-2 Victory Over No. 26 Virginia

Jan. 30, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 25 Florida State women’s tennis team earned its first dual-match victory Saturday, January 30, over ACC rival No. 26 Virginia in the first round of the ITA Kick-off Weekend. The Seminoles will now face the winner of host No. 15 Fresno State and No. 38 Ohio State Sunday at 2 p.m. in the championship round.

“The girls did a great job today redeeming what was a bit of a bad start to our spring season last weekend,” FSU Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. “The team I saw today and the team from a week ago are two different teams, and it was great to see what we saw from them today. We played as a unit and competed up and down the line. It was a complete team effort and I’m very excited that we have a shot at competing tomorrow for a spot in the NCAA Team Indoors.”

Although the Seminoles started the match slow by dropping the doubles point to the Cavaliers, they were able to fight back to post four points in singles to surpass the first round.

Leading the way with the first point was junior Katie Rybakova on court two with a victory over Jennifer Stevens 6-4, 6-1.

Senior Jessica Sucupira was the next ‘Nole to earn a point and push FSU in the lead with a win over Katie Gater 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Francesca Segarelli, ranked No. 62, was able to shake off her first year jitters by posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Erin Vierra to post FSU’s third point.

Securing the triumph for the Seminoles was junior Federica Suess on court five as she dominated Hana Tomljanovic 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) to score the fourth point.

If FSU is successful in winning the championship match, they will travel to the National Team Indoors Championships February 12-15 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Wisconsin’s campus.
