No. 25/21 Seminoles Host Unconquered Invitational

Feb. 14, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The No. 25/21 Florida State softball team hosts its second tournament of the season in the Unconquered Invitational this weekend at JoAnne Graf Field. Florida State begins with Tulsa on Friday, Feb. 15 at 12:15 p.m., followed by a 2:30 p.m. game against Arkansas.

A total of 10 games will be played once again this weekend, with the Unconquered Invitational including a consolation and championship game on Sunday. The Seminoles’ (4-0) opponents include No. 21/25 Hofstra, Arkansas and Tulsa.

In addition to their doubleheader on Friday, the Seminoles host nationally-ranked Hofstra on Saturday at approximately 12:15 p.m. Many games times for this weekend are subject to change due to the unexpected length of previous games.

With Florida State’s game against Hofstra on Saturday, the Seminoles will be going for their 15th nationally-ranked victory under head coach Lonni Alameda. The highest-ranked win in Alameda’s tenure came against No. 4 Michigan on Feb. 22, 2009, when Florida State defeated the Wolverines 6-5.

“This is going to be one very tough field and should provide some high quality softball for our fans to see,” Alameda said. “All four teams carry a lot of talent, a lot of good arms in the circle and we’re expecting a real fight in every game played. These types of challenges early in the season really build your team for the type of competition they face late in the year.”

Florida State begins the Unconquered Invitational coming off a hot-hitting Sunday on Feb. 10 when it combined to defeat Bethune-Cookman and Jacksonville by a 28-0 score. The big highlight came when Florida State defeated Bethune-Cookman 20-0, a school record for runs scored in the NCAA fastpitch era.

The Seminoles enter the Unconquered Invitational starting the season 4-0 for the third time since 2007. Two of this weekend’s three opponents are relatively new to Florida State. The Seminoles hold an 11-2 record vs. No. 21/25 Hofstra, but only lead Arkansas 1-0 overall and have never played Tulsa.

At last weekend’s invitational, redshirt senior Monica Perry accumulated a 3-0 record with 19 strikeouts in 14.1 innings pitched.

Hofstra will be opening its season in Tallahassee this weekend, returning first-team All-America pitcher Olivia Galati as the senior led the Pride to an NCAA Super Regional appearance last season. NFCA All-Region players Tessa Ziemba and Erin Trippi also return for Hofstra, who won the UCLA Regional that Florida State and San Diego State were also a part of in 2012.

The Razorbacks (7-0) are off to a fast start after earning two more wins on Wednesday in a doubleheader sweep over Jackson State. Arkansas is hitting .341 in the young season and shows a 1.19 team ERA.

Tulsa has shown its toughness in the early going, displaying a 3-2 record that includes wins over Purdue (4-1) and North Carolina (3-1). The Golden Hurricane also went 10 innings with No. 11 LSU but fell 1-0 despite nine strong innings from pitcher Lacey Middlebrooks in which she didn’t even allow an earned run.
