Gainesville, Fla.- No. 26 Florida State (31-19, 10-8 ACC) fell to No. 6 Florida (37-13, 16-8 SEC) after the Gators scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Wednesday night in front of 5,469 at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium. Senior right-hander Eddie Cannon (7-5) worked 7.1 innings and allowed just one run (unearned) with two strikeouts and no walks, while Kevin Lynch (3-4) took the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth.
FSU scored first with one run in the top of the fourth inning. Eddy Martinez-Esteve led off the inning with a triple to right center and made it 1-0 when Aaron Cheesman grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.
Florida tied the game at one apiece with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Justin Tordi and Brian Jeroloman recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Tordi moved to third as FSU first baseman Ryne Malone was charged with a throwing error on a double play ground ball by Jonathan Tucker. Stephen Barton’s sacrifice fly to right plated Tordi from third to tie the game.
Eddy Martinez-Esteve led off the ninth with a solo home run to right that gave FSU a 2-1 lead.
The Gators answered with one run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game again at 2-2. Matt LaPorta singled to right center and after Gavin Dickey came in as a pinch runner, Adam Davis single to right to put runners on first and third. Tordi’s bunt single to first base scored Dickey for the tying run. Jonathan Tucker’s RBI-single to right plated Davis from second for the game winner.
Bryan Zech (2-for-4) and Martinez-Esteve (3-for-4) led the Seminoles’ offense. Martinez-Esteve added two run with an RBI.
Florida State returns home this weekend for its final home series of the 2004 season. The Seminoles host the Duke Blue Devils in a three-game series. Game times are set for Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
