No. 3 Florida State Baseball Set To Host St. Joseph’s

March 10, 2003

Despite a 5-1 record last week and taking two of three from No. 15 Florida, FSU fell to No. 3 in Monday’s Collegiate Baseball poll and slipped one spot to No. 4 in Baseball America. The Seminoles took the first two games (5-4, 9-7) in Tallahassee before dropping game three 9-8 in Gainesville. The loss snapped the Seminoles’ 16-game winning streak. FSU rallied from an 8-0 deficit, but fell one run short. Sophomore shortstop Stephen Drew led the Tribe offensively last week, posting a .500 (12-24) average with four doubles, a home run and seven stolen bases, while slugging .792. FSU hosts St. Joseph’s on Tuesday and Wednesday before opening ACC play this weekend against Virginia. Freshman right-hander Mark Sauls (3-0, 2.62 ERA) will get the start on Tuesday, while Wednesday’s starter has yet to be determined.

ST. JOSEPH’S (1-6)

The Hawks enter Tuesday’s game with FSU on a two game losing streak and are 1-6 on the 2003 season. Their only win came at Virginia Commonwealth on February 14th by a score of 3-2. Left fielder Mike Walls leads St. Joseph’s offensively, hitting .364 (8-22) with three doubles and a triple. The Hawks’ pitching rotation has not yet been determined, but junior left-hander Bill McCollum (1-1, 6.55 ERA) is expected to start in one of the two outings.

Florida State leads the all-time series with St. Joseph’s 9-0, which dates back to 1972. The two schools last played in 2001 at Dick Howser, with FSU winning both games 16-4 and 6-0. John-Ford Griffin paced the Seminoles offensively in the two-game series, going 3-for-6 with four runs, six RBI, a double and two home runs. Two current Seminole pitchers, Marc LaMacchia and Trent Peterson picked up wins, while Daniel Hodges pitched in relief of game two.

All three games against St. Joseph’s will be carried live by WFLA News Radio 1270 (FSU’s flagship station) in Tallahassee. Lee Bowen and Jim Crosby will begin coverage 15 minutes prior to game time. Live audio broadcasts as well as live stats (Gametracker) can be followed via the internet at
