Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 3 Florida State (28-5, 6-3 ACC) defeated No. 23 North Carolina (19-9, 3-3 ACC) by a final score of 2-1 in the rubber game of a three-game series as 2,353 looked on at Dick Howser Stadium Sunday afternoon. Derrick Smith’s two-out single in the sixth proved to be the game-winning RBI. Senior left-hander Daniel Davidson (4-0) had another strong outing, allowing just one run in 6.1 innings pitched. Closer Daniel Hodges worked the final 1.2 innings to earn his seventh save of the season.
Sammy Hewitt tied the score in the fifth with a solo home run over the fence in right, his fifth of the season.
The Seminoles regained the lead with one-run in the sixth on Derrick Smith’s RBI single. Jerrod Brown got on with a bloop single into right and stole second before Smith came through with an RBI-single with two outs to plate Brown.
Davidson, who faced the minimum over the first three innings, scattered six hits and struck out six against just one walk. Davidson has allowed just three earned runs this season and has an ERA of 0.84.
UNC LHP Adam Kalkhof (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing just two runs on seven hits. Kalkhof struck out five and walked one.
Hodges has not allowed a run in his last 23 appearances, dating back to last season, a total of 33.1 innings. He is now tied for fourth in ACC history with 26 career saves.
Florida State returns to action next weekend, April 3-5, with a three-game series against Wake Forest at Dick Howser Stadium. Wake’s ace, Kyle Sleeth, will be attempting to set the NCAA record for consecutive victories Friday night. Game times are set for Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
