MESA, Arizona (seminoles.com) – The No. 3 ranked Florida State is in first place in the team standings, and junior Kim Metraux is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings after the first round of the Clover Cup at the Longbow Golf Club. The Seminoles are playing for the third consecutive and sixth victory of the season – which would both establish school records for team wins in a season. Florida State owns a two stroke lead over No. 5 Arizona State in a battle of two of the top five ranked teams by GolfWeek in women’s golf.
The Seminoles, who won the team championships at the Florida State Match-Up and The Dickson Invitational in February, are two strokes ahead of the Sun Devils as they play for their sixth win of the year. The Seminoles are three strokes ahead of Oklahoma (currently in third place) and are eight strokes ahead of Houston (currently in fourth place). Courtney Tibiletti of Houston and Julienne Soo of Oklahoma are tied for first in the individual standings with identical scores of six-under par 66.
Florida State is in first place in the team standings as it counted three strokes under par, and four strokes at par or better. The Seminoles counted two scores in the 60’s – a 68 by Kim Metraux and a 69 by Morgane Metraux – and a 70 by All-American Matilda Castren. The Seminoles were the only team in the 15-team field that counted three individual scores at under par.
“We played a good first round of golf today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We played some pretty good golf even though we gave a few shots back at the end of the round. Every time we are on the course, we learn a little more about ourselves as we continue to learn more about our team. We are putting ourselves into situations that we hope are helping to prepare each of our players for the end of the year and the postseason.”
Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) played the best golf of the year as she carded a 4-under par score of 68. It marked her second under par score in her last four rounds and included two birdies in her final four holes of the day. Metraux carded a team-high six birdies and, after a birdie on her first hole, was never above par for the round.
“Today was a great day to play golf,” said Metraux. “The course is in perfect condition and really enjoyed playing today. I felt like everything in my game was in place and I was able to play without any worries, which is always nice. Playing as the hunted is a great feeling; we have a very special team and we have a lot of fun playing together.”
Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) is in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings with a first round score of 69. Her round included five birdies and 16 holes scored at par or better. Metraux is only three strokes behind the individual leader as she plays for her third consecutive individual title. She won the individual championships at the Florida State Match-Up and The Dickson and is playing to become the first player in school history to win three consecutive individual championships.
The Seminoles will play with Arizona State and Oklahoma in Saturday’s second round. The trio of teams will tee of beginning at 12:40 ET.
