TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 36-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (8-4, 1-3 ACC) hosts the Illinois Fighting Illini (3-8, 0-1 Big Ten) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before heading to Tampa, Fla. to take on the Penn Quakers (3-5) at the Tampa Tennis at HCC on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. “We’re coming into the match with a lot of momentum from the NC State win,” freshman Nandini Das said.
“We’re looking to come out with a win going into Tampa and finishing this weekend strong before we go back into ACC play.”
The Seminoles hold a 6-1 all-time record over Illinois and are playing the Illini for the first time since 2010, a 4-3 win in Champaign, Ill.
Florida State and Penn will meet for the first time in program history on Sunday. This will be the third Ivy League team the Noles have faced this year, following wins over both Columbia and Harvard.
Noles in the Polls
Following a strong 5-2 win over the No. 26 NC State Wolfpack last Sunday, the Seminoles catapulted themselves up to the No. 36 team in the nation in the latest ITA team rankings.
A young doubles pair made their debut in the ITA doubles poll as freshman Nandini Das and sophomore Ariana Rahmanparast checked in at No. 56 in the nation. Das and Rahmanparast lead the team with seven doubles wins this dual match season, including a 6-4 victory over #30 Paige Hourigan/Kenya Jones of Georgia Tech on Feb. 26.
Head Coach Jennifer Hyde
“Another huge weekend ahead of us. We definitely have some momentum coming off the big win on Sunday. This season keeps you very humble. You’ve got to stay very focused and can’t hold on to big moments for too long and we’ve got to keep moving forward.”
“We’ve turned our focus specifically to a very scrappy Illinois team on Friday. They’ve been a little injured but they’re a very dangerous team and we will one hundred percent be ready for them. We expect it to be a very scrappy match, a very emotional match and we’re going to have to be ready for them.”
“Heading down to down to Tampa against Penn, who is another dangerous team. They’ve had a couple really good wins this season and some very close matches. Our job is to prepare and stay focused on our goals and stay focused on each individual matchday. We know what we have to bring on gameday in order for this team to be successful. We’ve identified it and now it’s a matter of doing that every time we step on the court.”
