TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Right-hander Jon McDonald struck out nine batters in six shutout innings as he led No. 4 Florida State (1-0) to a 9-2 win over UNC Asheville (0-1) in the Seminoles season opening game in front of 2,032 fans at Dick Howser Stadium.
Designated-hitter John Halliday belted a leadoff home run in the second inning to start a four-run scoring surge. Catcher Jeremiah Klosterman drove in two runs on a double off the rightfield screen while centerfielder Karl Jernigan knocked in FSU’s fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to rightfield.
Jernigan also ripped a two-run homer off the scoreboard in leftfield to add to the Seminoles lead in the fourth inning. Freshman Ryan Barthelemy hit a two-run double in the seventh in his first collegiate at bat for Florida State’s final runs.
McDonald (1-0) allowed just two infield hits and did not walk a batter in six shutout innings.
Right-hander Josh White (0-1) fanned seven batters in five innings of work as he took the loss for the Bulldogs. White surrended seven runs on four hits and four walks in the outing.
UNC Asheville squashed FSU’s shutout in the eighth inning with a two-run homer by second baseman Jason Ronai.
The Seminoles will host the Bulldogs tomorrow, January 30th at 2:00 p.m., and on Sunday, January 31st at 2:00 p.m.
