TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Third baseman Marshall McDougall knocked in
seven runs on two home runs and a triple as he led No. 4 Florida State
(2-0) to a 16-3 victory over UNC Asheville (0-2) in front of 2,127 fans
at Dick Howser Stadium.
Florida State led off its double-digit campaign with a grand
slam home run by McDougall over the centerfield wall in the second
inning. The Seminoles continued their power surge with solo homers by
designated hitter John Halliday and first baseman Kevin Cash in the
third inning giving FSU a 6-0 lead. McDougall added his second home run
of the game in the fourth frame, a two-run shot to leftfield.
Right-hander Nick Stocks (1-0) stuck out five batters in six
innings of work. He surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits and
two walks in the outing. Stocks held the Bulldogs scoreless for four
innings before allowing a solo home run by first baseman Josh White.
McDougall added an RBI-triple to his career day sparking a
five-run rally in the sixth inning. Rightfielder Matt Diaz drove in a
run on a double to centerfield adding to FSU’s total. Diaz finished the
day with three hits and two RBI. Shortstop Brett Groves also
contributed RBI-singles in the sixth and eighth innings.
UNC Asheville righthander Todd Interdonato (0-1) allowed eight
runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Interdonato struck out three
and walked four batters in the loss.
FSU relievers Mike Smalley and Mike DiBlasi both hurled a
scoreless inning of work for the Seminoles.
