FLORIDA STATE BASEBALL QUICK FACTS – WESTERN KENTUCKY

#4 FLORIDA STATE (0-0)

Mike Martin’s 2001 Seminoles, ranked No. 4 in the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll, take on Western Kentucky in a two-game series in Tallahassee to start the season. Junior RHP Blair Varnes, a 3rd team preseason Collegiate Baseball All-American, will open as the No. 1 starter on Saturday. Varnes (11-4, 3.88 ERA in 2000) is the only returnee from last year’s starting rotation.
At the plate, the Seminoles are led by juniors John-Ford Griffin and Ryan Barthelemy. Griffin, a preseason All-American according to Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, led last year’s team with a .403 batting average. Barthelemy has moved from first base to third base and coaches have been impressed with his progress so far. Barthelemy, who ranks second all-time with five career College World Series home runs, hit 14 homers last season and led the team with 71 RBI.
