#5 FLORIDA STATE (26-8, 2-4 ACC)
Florida State, ranked No. 5 in this week’s Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll, returns to Dick Howser Stadium to host Mercer Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Seminoles were swept at UNC last weekend in their second conference series of the season. The series marked just the fourth time since FSU joined the conference in 1992 that the Seminoles have been swept in ACC play. All-American third baseman Ryan Barthelemy (.417) has hit safely in 48 of his last 50 games. He leads the team with eight home runs, 47 RBI and 15 doubles. Sophomore Tony McQuade leads the team with a .423 batting average. Starting SS Stephen Drew (.346) has been out since Feb. 1 with a fractured left foot, but may see action this week. The Seminoles travel to Wake Forest this weekend for their third straight conference road series. The Demon Deacons, ranked No. 9 in the coaches poll, will be FSU’s fourth opponent this season that has been ranked in the Top 10 at the time of the game. The Seminoles went 6-2 against Stanford, Arizona State and Florida earlier this season. Four ACC teams are ranked among the Top 10 in that poll this week (No. 5 FSU, No. 9 Wake, No. 1 Clemson and No. 7 Ga. Tech).
MERCER (13-12, 5-4 TAAC)
The Bears are coming off a six-game homestand, including a weekend series with Savannah State in which they took two-of-three (11-4, 1-5, 6-4). Mercer has won seven of their last 10 games coming into Tuesday’s game with FSU. RHP Byron Kiefer (1-0, 9.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Bears.
Florida State leads the all-time series with Mercer 56-8, which dates back to 1948. FSU played the Bears once last season in Tallahassee and took the victory by a score of 15-1.
