TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets pulled the first upset of the ACC Championships today as they took a 6-2 win from North Carolina at the Seminole Softball Complex on Florida State’s campus. Georgia Tech improves to 22-37 as North Carolina drops to 40-22.
“We unloaded on the ball today and hit it hard on every occasion,” Georgia Tech Head Coach Kate Madden said. “We were aggressive today and executed in every facet of the game. Mimi picked us up when we needed only giving up five hits and despite three errors we played like we were capable on offense.”
North Carolina was on the board first in the first inning, scoring off an error from right field. Georgia Tech answered in the bottom of the inning with back to back singles before Anne Knobbe hit a three run homer over the left center wall, breaking a school record with her 10th homerun on the season. The Yellow Jackets then scored three in the third inning off four hits and an error and the Tar Heels scored one more in the fourth. Knobbe was 2-3 from the plate as Jen Klesaris led North Carolina, going a perfect 2-2 from the plate. Mimi Utt picked up her 14th win this season as Radara McHugh dropped to 26-15. The Yellow Jackets had ten hits while the Tar Heels had five.
“Certainly, we’re disappointed to be out of the tournament so quickly,” North Carolina Head Coach Donna Papa said. “Georgia Tech really hit the ball well today. We just never got our bats going at all. It’s a tough way to end the season.”
Georgia Tech picked up their sixth win ever in the ACC Tournament and will face Maryland at 7:00pm tonight.
