GLENCOE, Ill. (seminoles.com) – No. 9 Duke defeated No. 5 Florida State, 4-1, at the Northwestern Quad Women’s Golf Match on a rainy and cold day at Lake Shore Country Club. The Seminoles’ point came as seniors Matilda Castren and Lydia Gumm halved their matches against the Blue Devils. No. 11 Northwestern defeated No. 2 Alabama, 3.5-2.5, in the other morning match.
The afternoon matches with Northwestern scheduled to face Duke and Florida State set to play Alabama were cancelled because of inclement weather. All four teams will now turn their attention to the NCAA regional championships, May 8-10. The Seminoles are the No. 2 seed in the Columbus (Ohio) Regional where they will play to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Duke’s Lisa Maguire and Gurbani Singh put the Blue Devils up by a 2-0 margin as they won the first two matches of the day. Maguire defeated Florida State’s Amanda Doherty, 3&1, while Singh defeated Kim Metraux by a 4&3 margin.
Gumm, Florida State’s senior captain, earned the first point for the Seminoles as she halved match No. 3 three against Duke’s Ana Belac. Gumm was two holes down with five holes remaining to be played and won holes No. seven and nine to tie the match. With the match beginning on the back nine, Gumm battled to win the 16th and 18th holes of the match to earn the tie.
Florida State’s Castren earned the second point of the match for the Seminoles as she finished all square with Duke’s Leona Maguire. Maguire sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to earn the tie. Maguire is the No. 1 ranked amateur player in the world.
“The biggest reason for playing in this match was to prepare for the postseason,” said Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond. “We certainly accomplished that goal. We didn’t play our best golf today but I absolutely believe that we learned a lot and everything we learned will make us stronger going into regionals next week.”
