Final Stats

Tallahassee – The No. 54 Florida State women’s tennis team (5-0) bested the No. 72 UCF Knights (0-3), 6-1, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee.

FSU jumped out to take the doubles point with quick victories in the number one and three positions. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and newcomer Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham), playing at the number one position for the second time this season, defeated Julie Pecastaing and Ola Luczak, 8-1. The veteran doubles tandem of seniors Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) and Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton) posted an 8-2 score against Pamela Fernandez and Megan Rosario-Hunter to secure the doubles point.

At the number two position in doubles, senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) and courtmate Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) fought UCF’s Kristina Lohmos and Anna Westin for the 9-7 decision. FSU started off 2-0 before UCF gained those points plus two more back to put the score at 4-2 in UCF’s favor. The Noles then tied it at four points and took the lead, 5-4 after battling through 6 deuces. With the third tie at 5-5, UCF put together a run that looked to seal the win for the Knights. With the set at 7-5 and UCF on their last serve to win, the Noles fought it off, took the game and eventually the match finishing with four straight points to take the exciting, two-hour match.

After Dumitrescu and Deason’s doubles finale, the Noles headed to singles where they would end up taking five of six. Dumitrescu lead off at the number one spot fighting off Pecastaing, 6-3, 6-4. Moldovan defeated Westin 6-2, 6-1 while Deason bested Lohmos 6-1, 6-2. At the number four spot, Denny defeated Fernandez, whom she also took a victory from in the fall to win the 2003 Lady Seminole Classic Flight B draw, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. At the number five spot, newcomer Roxanne Clarke continued to put up wins, this time at the hands of Luczak, 6-2, 6-3.

The only loss of the afternoon came in a competitive contest that pitted sophomore Alina Mihailescu (Constanta, Romania/ Mircea cel Batran) against Hunter, with UCF taking the point, 6-3, and 7-5.

Florida State is back in action for its sixth and final home match before heading on a three contest road trip through Alabama. The Tribe faces Auburn on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
