No. 6 FSU Heads to Clemson for Weekend Series

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Florida State baseball team, which has won four of its last five ACC series, opens a three-game string at Atlantic Coast Conference foe Clemson on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The remaining games are scheduled for Sunday (4 p.m.) and Monday (7 p.m.). FSU, which leads the all-time series 71-63-1, won two of three games at Clemson in the most recent meeting between the two programs in the Palmetto State (March 21-22, 2014).

“Clemson is one of those places that is a challenge,” said head coach Mike Martin. “Their fans are great and very enthusiastic, so we have to be able to go in there and remain mentally tough. It’s going to be a real challenge for our team because there is no doubt that when you go up there you know you are the visiting club.”

The Seminoles are 5-4 away from Dick Howser Stadium, including wins over ACC opponents Pittsburgh, Boston College and Wake Forest this season.

The games on Saturday and Sunday will be featured on ESPN3 with commentary provided by Pete Yanity and Marty Clary.

Redshirt senior Mike Compton (4-2, 3.86) will start on Saturday and face lefty Charlie Barnes (3-4, 5.02 ERA). Compton is looking for back-to-back wins and his first victory against the Tigers in his career.

Sophomore Drew Carlton (4-2, 4.57 ERA) will make his 11th start of the season for the Seminoles on Sunday. Carlton, who shares the team lead in strikeouts (43) with Tyler Holton, is in search of his first win in April after a recent series of no decisions against Wake Forest (April 16) and Notre Dame (April 24). In his most recent outing, against the Irish, Carlton recorded a season-high seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

Cole Sands (3-4, 4.81 ERA) closes out the series on Monday evening against the Tigers’ Alex Schnell (0-0, 3.00). The game will be featured on ESPNU with Steve Lenox and Jay Walker providing commentary.
