No. 6 Seminole Men’s Golf Team In 5th Place At Isleworth Collegiate

Oct. 21, 2007

The No. 6 ranked Florida State University men’s golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Isleworth/UCF Collegiate Invitational at the Isleworth Country Club. The Seminoles were led in the first round by junior All-American Matt Savage who is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings after shooting a three-under par 69 over the first 18 holes.

Florida State, one of 14 nationally ranked teams in one of the most powerful fields of the fall 2007 collegiate golf season, is only two strokes behind No. 4 ranked Oklahoma State, tournament host UCF and No. 7 ranked Southern California heading into Monday’s second of three rounds. The Seminoles are the second highest placing ACC team (one stroke behind Wake Forest) and are one stroke ahead of Clemson and seven strokes ahead of No. 3 ranked Georgia Tech after the first round.

Rhys Enoch of East Tennessee State, Greg Forest of UCF and Jamie Lovemark of Southern California shot identical scores of four-under par 68 and are all tied for first place in the individual standings. Florida State’s Savage, the No. 14 ranked individual in the nation, is one shot back after carding a 69. The Seminoles’ Jonas Blixt, who is ranked No. 7 among collegiate individuals, shot an even par 72 and is four strokes behind the leaders.

Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played well throughout the first round and finished with 15 holes scored at par or better with a season-high six birdies. He birdied his first two holes of the day and finished the back nine at five-under par. Savage closed his afternoon on the tougher side of the course (holes one through nine) and finished those holes at two-over par.

Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) started slowly with two birdies on the first three holes but closed his round at two under par to finish the round with an even par 72. He carded five birdies and eight holes at par and was never more than two strokes over par during his round.

Senior Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) one of 12 players (including Blixt) who finished the first round with an even par score of 72. He was even par on both sides of the course with two birdies and two bogeys on his first nine holes and one birdie and one bogey on his second set of nine holes. Jeon was as much as one-under par and never more than one-over par during the round. Both Jeon and Blixt are tied for 23rd in the individual standings.

Freshman Drew Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior Tommy Rymer (Hastings, Minn.) are in a tied for 34th place with one-over par scores of 73.

“I’m not sure any team played as well collectively as we did in the first round,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “When your throw out score is a one-over par – that’s pretty good. We have displayed the ability to finish well so far this year and if history repeats itself I think we can play ourselves into a good position going into the final round.”
