No. 8 FSU Baseball Picked Fourth In ACC Coaches’ Preseason Poll

Jan. 19, 2006

Greensboro, NC – The 2006 Florida State baseball team was tabbed for a fourth place finish in the new 12-team ACC by the league’s coaches Thursday. The eighth-ranked Seminoles trailed No. 2 Clemson, No. 10 Georgia Tech and No. 7 North Carolina. Clemson received eight of the 12 first place votes while the Heels and Jackets each received two.

The Seminoles enter the 2006 season returning two All-Americans from the previous season for just the second time since 1999. This year’s team is still you but experienced as FSU’s 13 juniors have appeared in 534 games in their FSU careers. Florida State returns three of its top four hitters from the 2005 season and four of the five pitchers that started double digit games for the Seminoles last season are back in 2006.

Clemson recorded total of 139 points in the balloting.  The Tigers recorded a 43-23 record a year ago and came within one game of the College World Series.  Georgia Tech was picked to finish second in the conference. The Yellow Jackets, the defending ACC Champions, return eight starters in the field and eight of their top 10 pitchers from last year’s squad. North Carolina is the coaches’ pick to finish third.  The Tar Heels, who posted a 41-19-1 record last season, return 19 letterwinners for the 2006 campaign.

Florida State opens its season at home February 3 at 4:00 p.m. versus Charleston Southern. Baseball fans can get their first look at the 2006 Seminoles Saturday, January 28 at Fan Day. The entire squad will sign autographs before taking the field for an intra-squad scrimmage. Festivities begin at 12:00 p.m. and admission is free.
